What’s Next for the Miami Heat?

what's next miami heat

The NBA season is finally over, with LeBron James winning his 4th ring for the Los Angeles Lakers against the Miami Heat.

The Heat was 2 games short in winning it all, but it may just be the start for them as we should expect more exciting things for this team moving forward.

Heat Players with expiring contracts

We start with the free agency as nothing much is expected to happen with the Heat getting the #20 Draft pick.

The Heat have expiring contracts in post-season starting guard Goran Dragic, useful forward Jae Crowder, Center Myles Leonard, and Derrick Jones Jr, as among those notable.

The Heat are expected to extend the contracts of Dragic and Crowder and sign a mid-level free agent, all for 1 year deals.

The Heat cannot afford to offer more than 1 year deals especially with the influx of superstar free agents in 2021 with the likes of LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and back to back Most Valuable Player Giannis Antetokoumnpo.

2020 Free agency targets

This year’s free agency might not be on the same level as that of 2021 Free Agency, you cannot discount the fact that there are many rotation players and even pieces that can help a contender next season.

One of them is Danilo Gallinari. He was involved in a possible trade with the Heat. However, trades talks broke down for unknown reasons.

The Heat might want to get the Italian NBA veteran for free instead of sacrificing their young assets for an aging player.

An interesting free agent that the Heat tried to sign a few months ago is DeMarcus Cousins. He is still one of the best centers in the NBA when Healthy.

The Heat are known for developing young talents and getting the best out of aging players. Cousins is a high-risk high-reward player that can fill the void in the center position.

The heat can give him a year to show what he is still capable and still retain flexibility for the blockbuster 2021 Free Agency.

Other notable free agents that the Heat might take a look at are: Serge Ibaka, Montrezl Harrell, Fred VanVleet, Joe Harris, and Davis Bertans.

Verdict

If Miami Heat can keep their exciting core this year, they are definitely one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference and can go at it again for a title shot.

Not only that, whether they fail again next season or succeed at winning it, they have a chance to land a superstar in 2021.

Exciting things ahead for the Miami Heat.
