One of the greatest players to wear a Manchester United uniform knows success takes time.

Wayne Rooney urged United fans to be patient. He said it could take "two or three more years" before they restore the glory they once had at the top of the league.

Rooney is United's record scorer with 253 goals in his 13 years with the club. The now Derby County member is set to face his old club in the FA Cup fifth round on Thursday.

Rooney's legacy at Old Trafford

The 34-year old saw his best days at Old Trafford where he won every domestic honor along with the Champions League and the Europa League.

Rooney left United in 2017 to go back to his boyhood club Everton. A year later, he moved the United States, playing for DC United in the Major League Soccer.

He transferred to Derby as a player-coach in January 2020.

Rooney to United: "Be Patient"

The former England captain is optimistic about United's future. He believes they are moving in the right direction under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's tutelage.

The fans have to trust the process and understand that their team needs more time before they challenge for major honors.

"It is going to take another two or three years, I believe," Rooney said. "The important thing is for them to try and get into the Champions League this year."

"It is really tight at the minute. I think that will help them a lot if they can do that -- but it is going to take time."

Fans should trust the process

According to Rooney, United fans must be a bit patient and give the current squad a chance try and prove themselves.

"They need to bring some players in, they need to also get rid of some players, and within two or three years they have to be challenging again," Rooney said.
