Dana White targeting Conor McGregor vs. Cowboy Cerrone in 2020

Conor McGregor and Donald Cerrone

Conor McGregor plans return to the UFC early in 2020 and the boss already has plans for him in store.

UFC president Dana White said on Wednesday that he is targeting Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone as McGregor's potential opponent in his return.

“We have nothing done,” White said when asked about the Irishman's next fight when he steps back into the Octagon. “Nothing is even close to being done, so I hate to even talk about this stuff and say it because it might not happen. It might happen, but we’re looking at 'Cowboy' (Donald Cerrone)," he explained further.

The potential fight will pit the no. 3 versus the no. 5 lightweight fighters in the UFC. White is looking at Jan. 18 in Las Vegas as the possible date for this fight.

McGregor plans return to the UFC

McGregor has already made plans for his return but declined to name his opponent. However, he indicated the same date and place that White had said.

“I would like to announce the return of ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor will take place on Jan. 18 in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada,” McGregor said during a press appearance in Moscow last week.

“So that is my comeback fight, it’s 12 weeks this Saturday. I’m in prime physical condition. I’ve agreed the date with the company. As far as the opponent, I have the opponent’s name, but for me and the game that I’m in, and from experience, if I was to give you people the name – which I would love to do – I know the UFC would flip it because they are a crafty company," he added.

Inevitable match-up

Cerrone and McGregor are bound to fight anytime soon based on their place on the rankings. The two have been trading jabs on social media but no bout ever came through

The Irishman hasn't fought since that tragic night when he lost his lightweight title to Khabib Nurmagomedov. That night will forever be more notable for the brawl that happened after the fight rather than the fight itself.

Cerrone on the other hand has fought five times since McGregor's last. "The Cowboy" won three in a row before losing the next two to Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje.

This fight may or may not be a lightweight title eliminator.
