UFC Featherweight Chad Mendes is only weeks removed from his TKO win over Myles Jury and he is already thinking of another time off. His win at UFC Fight Night 133 in Boise may already mean top contention but Mendes isn't rushing things just yet.
In an interview with Eddie Mercado for BloodyElbow.com, Mendes talked about his win over Jury, his business ventures, and his plans for the future.
Enjoying layoffs
Prior to his fight with Jury in Boise, Mendes was coming off a two-year suspension after testing positive for GHRP-6, a type of growth hormone release stimulator. Mendes used the time off to focus on other endeavours, as well as recharge.
Mendes indicated in past interviews how he never had long layoffs since turning pro in 2008. He said in his interview with Mercado that he wants his next fight to have title implications and that he will be willing to wait until early next year if he has to.
Future plans
Mercado threw in Mendes' Team Alpha Male stablemate Josh Emmett, who is tied with Mendes on the featherweight rankings at no. 6. Mendes however stated that fighting his teammate would not make sense if it does not take either one closer to the belt.
"I don't have to fight for money. The business I started, the people I work with, I have the money. It's not about that, so I don't need to force anything." Furthermore, he said that he wants to make sure every fight takes him closer to the belt instead of anything backwards.
Mendes believes that a win over Frankie Edgar is what he needs to put him back into contention however, Edgar has a fight lined up already.
